Important Message from Lempster Fire Department

As the heating season is upon us and attention turns towards cold weather, pellet and wood stove sales are on the rise. We ask that you put your and your family’s safety first when installing and running a pellet or wood stove.  Have your unit installed professionally or carefully follow all installation instructions and clearances from combustable items.  Better yet, have your unit inspected before running it the first time. Don’t forget to clean your chimney!  Pellet and Wood Stove Safety Tips

It is important to remember the safety of you and your family. Please have your unit professionally installed and inspected before lighting it for the first time – and inspect and clean your chimney before the first use of the season.  Always follow manufacturer specificicationss.  Additional safety tips to remember:

  • Combustible: capable of catching fire and burning; inflammable; flammable
  • Proper vent installation including: thimbles into masonry and through combustible walls
  • Follow manufacturer specifications for clearance from venting materials and around stove
  • Do not modify your stove or venting materials
  • Clean your stove and vent and inspect monthly
  • Keep ALL combustibles away from and off of stove
  • Keep a Class A fire extinguisher close to your stove
  • Have a smoke and carbon monoxide detector in the same room as your stove – you should also have one on each floor – check the batteries monthly.
  • If you have small children, gate off your stove to prevent accidental burns
  • Have an Escape Plan in case of fire. Determine a meeting place and two ways to get out of your home. 
  • In case of a fire – get out and stay out.
